Chotila is one of the few major Gujarat temples whose hours are governed by the sun rather than a fixed clock, and understanding why saves you a wasted trip. The shrine sits on an exposed summit with no residential quarters on top, and an old vow holds that the goddess is left undisturbed after dark. So the last aarti of the day is performed at dusk, the deity is put to rest, and the entire staff walks back down. This is why you will see closing times published as 7:00 PM on one site and 8:00 PM on another: both are approximations of a sunset cutoff that drifts across the calendar.

Practically, this means winter visitors face the tightest window. A December dusk near 6:00 PM pulls the closing forward, whereas a June evening stretches it past 7:30 PM. Aim to begin climbing at least an hour and a half before sunset, both to finish the steps comfortably and to catch the evening aarti at the top. Mornings are the calmest time, with the pre-dawn opening around 5:00 AM rewarding early climbers with cool air and thin crowds. Only during Navratri does the sunset rule lift, when the summit stays lit and open through the night.
