The journey to Pavagadh comes in three legs, and understanding them saves confusion. Leg one is reaching the base at Champaner, roughly 45 to 50 km from Vadodara via Halol, well served by state buses, shared taxis and private cars. Leg two is the climb from Champaner up to Machi, the mid-hill plateau, done by road (local vehicles and taxis ply this stretch) or on foot for pilgrims taking the traditional trek. Leg three is Machi to the summit sanctum: the Udan Khatola ropeway covers the steep section in about six minutes, after which roughly 250 steps remain.
Rail travellers should not be misled by the tiny Champaner Road Junction; while it is the nearest station, its train frequency is limited, and Vadodara Junction is the realistic railhead for most long-distance arrivals. From Vadodara, taxis and buses run regularly and the drive is about an hour and a half. Flyers land at Vadodara airport (about 49 km) or Ahmedabad (about 150 km). A practical tip: parking and vehicle access are organised at the base and at Machi, so decide in advance whether you are trekking the full hill or riding up, because that choice determines where you leave your vehicle.
