Tulsishyam rewards a bit of route planning because the two road approaches are not equal. The Una side is well surfaced and is the approach almost every guide recommends; the Amreli-Dhari side is longer and reported to be rough with potholes, so avoid it after rain or if you are prone to car sickness on bad roads.
On rail, Una at about 30 km is the sensible railhead even though Gir Gadhara is nominally closer, simply because Una has more usable services and taxis. From the station you will want a hired car for the final forest leg; there is no dense public transport into the sanctuary. Fuel up before you enter the forest zone, as there are no conveniences along the way.
By air, Diu is the nearest strip at roughly 50 to 55 km but thinly served; most travellers coming from outside Gujarat fly into Rajkot and drive down, folding Tulsishyam into a Somnath and Gir circuit. However you come, aim to arrive by early afternoon so the forest crossing and the climb happen in good light.
