There are two honest answers to when you should come. For sheer comfort of darshan, the cool months from October to March, with daytime temperatures around 10 to 25 C, let you move through the complex without the crush or the monsoon heat. This is the window for a calmer, contemplative visit and for pairing the temple with the surrounding Santhal Pargana sights.
But Deoghar's spiritual crescendo is Shravan, the monsoon month of July to August, when the Shravani Mela runs for weeks and saffron Kanwariyas pour in after the roughly 105 km barefoot walk from Sultanganj carrying Ganga water. It is overwhelming, physically demanding and unforgettable. Mahashivratri in February or March brings the night-long puja and the Baidyanath Mahotsav cultural programme. Choose Shravan or Mahashivratri for the fervour, the cool season for the ease; they are almost opposite experiences of the same shrine.
