Baba Baidyanath Dham, where a month-long river of saffron pilgrims walks 105 km to pour Ganga on Shiva

In the Santhal Parganas of Jharkhand stands one of the twelve self-manifest Jyotirlingas, revered as Vaidyanath, the physician of the gods. It is also counted among the Shakti Peethas, making the Deoghar complex one of the rare sites where a Jyotirlinga and a Peeth sit within the same walls. For most of the year it is an intimate temple town; through the monsoon month of Shravan it becomes the stage for the Shravani Mela, when millions of Kanwariyas in saffron carry Ganga water on foot from Sultanganj to bathe the linga.

Deoghar is a full pilgrim town with a wide range of stays: budget hotels and mid-range lodges near the temple, several dharamshalas and guest houses run by trusts, and homestays that give a local Santhal Pargana feel. Rooms start from roughly ₹1,000 in the off season. During Shravani Mela and Mahashivratri demand spikes and rates climb, so book weeks ahead; many Kanwariyas also use tented camps and rest-halls set up along the route.
