Sabarimala Sree Dharmasastha Temple: Dress Code & Temple Rules

• Observe the 41-day vratham (deeksha) before the pilgrimage: strict vegetarian diet, celibacy, no alcohol, barefoot living, daily prayers, and no shaving, haircut or nail-cutting.
• Wear plain, simple clothes in black, dark blue or saffron. Black is the classic vratham colour, worn to signify detachment from worldly desire.
• Carrying the irumudi kettu, the two-part cloth bundle of offerings (ghee-filled coconut, camphor, rice and personal items), is mandatory. Only a pilgrim bearing the irumudi on the head may climb the 18 holy steps.
• Do not step on the Pathinettam Padi (18 steps) without the irumudi, and do not climb them more than the vow permits; the steps are themselves worshipped.
• Address and greet fellow pilgrims as Swami; the pilgrimage treats all as equal, dropping caste and status for the journey.
• The temple traditionally admits girls below 10 and women above 50; women of menstruating age have historically not undertaken the climb. The legal position has been contested, so verify the current situation before planning a trip.
• Maintain silence, cleanliness and discipline on the forest trek; this is a protected tiger-reserve landscape, so carry out your waste.

The Sabarimala dress code is inseparable from the vow behind it. For 41 days before the climb a pilgrim lives as a Swami: strictly vegetarian, celibate, barefoot, off alcohol, praying daily, and leaving hair, beard and nails uncut. During this deeksha and on the journey he wears plain clothes in black, dark blue or saffron, black being the classic colour of detachment from worldly desire.

The non-negotiable rule at the shrine is the irumudi kettu, a two-compartment cloth bundle. The front holds the offerings for the deity, chiefly the ghee-filled coconut for the Neyyabhishekam plus camphor and puja items; the rear holds the pilgrim's own provisions. Only a person carrying the irumudi on the head is permitted to climb the 18 sacred steps, the Pathinettam Padi, into the sanctum. Everyone else must take a side route and view from below.

The pilgrimage deliberately flattens hierarchy: strangers address each other as Swami, and caste and rank are set aside for the road. On the age question, the temple has traditionally admitted girls under 10 and women over 50; the legal and social position for women of menstruating age has been contested, so confirm the current situation before planning.
