The defining fact of reaching Sabarimala is that the road ends before the temple does. Every vehicle, bus or car, terminates at Pamba, the base station on the river of the same name at the foot of the hill. From Pamba the only way up is on foot, an approx 5 km climb through the Periyar forest to the Sannidhanam.
By rail, Chengannur (approx 90 km) is the most-used railhead, with Kottayam and Tiruvalla as backups; all feed buses and taxis toward Pathanamthitta and on to Pamba. By air, Kochi (approx 154 km) is nearest, with Thiruvananthapuram (approx 170 km) the alternative. In the Mandala-Makaravilakku rush the authorities hold private vehicles at Nilackal, roughly 20 km short of Pamba, and run a continuous shuttle ferry of buses down to the base.
The traditional penance route is different again: devout pilgrims start at Erumeli and walk a long forest path of roughly 40 km, crossing hills and streams over two days. Most modern pilgrims take the short Pamba climb, but the Erumeli trek remains the spiritually complete way in.
