Konark Sun Temple: Best Time to Visit & Festivals

Konark: Best Time to Visit & FestivalsThe comfortable window is October to March, when Odisha's coastal heat and humidity ease and the open stone complex is pleasant to walk.

The season makes or breaks a Konark visit because almost the entire complex is walked in the open. October to March is the sweet spot, with cooler, drier coastal weather; April to June is fierce on the shadeless grounds, and the July to September monsoon can wash out a morning. Winter also brings the two events worth timing a trip around.

Every December the Konark Dance Festival (now the Konark Music and Dance Festival) fills five evenings with Odissi and other classical forms performed on an open-air stage against the floodlit temple, running alongside the International Sand Art Festival on Chandrabhaga beach nearby. It is the most atmospheric time to see the monument, though also the busiest.

The temple's sacred peak is Magha Saptami in February, when pilgrims converge before dawn at Chandrabhaga beach for a ritual sea bath and sun-worship, with a large fair (the Chandrabhaga Mela) around it. If you want the spiritual pulse of Konark rather than the cultural spectacle, this is the day to come.
