Amritsar is one of the easiest major pilgrimage cities to reach, and the temple sits inside the old walled city near the Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) gate. Amritsar Junction, the nearest railway station at about 2 km, is a major hub with direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Howrah and across Punjab, including the aptly named Golden Temple Mail. From the station, the standout option is the free SGPC seva bus that runs every 15 to 20 minutes; autos and e-rickshaws are also cheap and quick.
By air, Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport lies about 13 km out, with domestic flights and select international routes to the Gulf, UK and Southeast Asia. A free shuttle again runs to the temple, or a taxi covers it in roughly 30 minutes depending on old-city congestion.
By road, Amritsar is about 450 km from Delhi (8 to 9 hours) on NH44, around 230 km from Chandigarh and just 80 km from Jalandhar. Overnight Volvo buses are frequent. Note that the immediate approach through the pedestrianised Heritage Street is walk-only, so plan to park at the multi-level facility or a nearby lot and cover the last stretch on foot.
