Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib): Where to Stay

The most authentic option is the SGPC-run sarais right beside the temple, offered free out of seva: Guru Ram Das Niwas, Guru Nanak Niwas, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Niwas and others provide basic rooms and large dormitories, with NRI/foreigner rooms bookable in advance and simple deluxe rooms available for a modest donation. Turn up with an ID; stays are usually capped at a few nights. Beyond the sarais, the old city around the temple is packed with budget lodges and mid-range hotels within a 5 to 10 minute walk, and Amritsar has plenty of business and heritage hotels near the Heritage Street and Ranjit Avenue. Because the langar feeds everyone free around the clock, pilgrims can eat and sleep here on almost nothing.

The defining experience is to stay in the SGPC sarais that ring the temple, run entirely on the principle of seva. Guru Ram Das Niwas, Guru Nanak Niwas, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Niwas and others offer free dormitory space and basic rooms to pilgrims of any background; there are large dorm halls plus separate rooms, including NRI and foreigner rooms and simple deluxe rooms available against a modest donation. Bring a photo ID, expect a cap of a few nights, and keep valuables close in the communal areas.

Because the langar serves free vegetarian meals around the clock, a pilgrim can genuinely eat and sleep at the Golden Temple on almost nothing, which is part of its character and worth experiencing at least once.

For more comfort, the old city immediately around the temple is dense with budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the entrance, many with rooftop views of the gold dome. Ranjit Avenue and the area near the Heritage Street hold the smarter business and heritage hotels. Book ahead for Gurpurab, Baisakhi and Diwali, when both the sarais and city hotels fill completely.
