• Footwear must be removed before entering the temple complex; there are stands near the entrance, and the granite courtyard gets very hot by midday, so carry socks for the walk across.
• Dress modestly and traditionally. Men are comfortable in dhoti, veshti or trousers with a shirt; women in saree, salwar kameez or a long skirt. Cover shoulders and knees at the sanctum.
• Avoid shorts, short skirts and sleeveless or revealing clothing when approaching the inner shrine.
• Photography is freely allowed in the vast courtyard and of the exterior, but photography and phones are restricted inside the sanctum; follow the posted signs and priests' instructions.
• Maintain quiet decorum inside; this is an active place of worship as well as a protected monument, so do not climb the structures or touch the carvings.

Because this is both a working temple and a UNESCO monument, expectations sit between reverent and practical. A tip specific to Thanjavur: the open granite courtyard is enormous and turns scorching by late morning, so a pair of socks makes the long barefoot walk to the sanctum far more bearable.
