The Big Temple keeps a classic South Indian split schedule: the sanctum opens around 6:00 AM, stays open through the morning until roughly 12:30 PM, then shuts for a long midday break before reopening near 4:00 PM and staying active until about 8:30 PM. The crucial thing to understand at Thanjavur is that the monument and the shrine follow slightly different clocks.
