The season itself is short, so the real question is which weeks within it to choose. May and June, right after the opening, bring the biggest crowds and the clearest mountain views, but also the peak rush. The monsoon, roughly July into September, is the time to avoid: the valley is prone to landslides and road closures, and travel becomes genuinely risky. September and October reopen clear, cool weather and thinner crowds before the shrine closes.
The festival calendar frames the season. Akshaya Tritiya marks the joyous reopening, when the goddess is brought back up from Mukhba in procession. Ganga Dussehra, in the early summer, celebrates the mythical descent of the Ganga to earth and is one of the holiest days to worship the river here. The season closes around Diwali, when the last darshan is given before the idol is carried down for the winter, an emotional farewell that draws its own crowd.
