For a comfortable trip, come between October and March, when Guwahati's weather is cool and dry and the autumn Durga Puja fills the hill with the year's most intense worship and the main season of bali. This is the easy window for first-time visitors: pleasant climbs, clear river views and a temple in full ceremonial swing without the monsoon's slippery paths.
The spiritual peak, though, is the Ambubachi Mela in June, around the 22nd to the 26th. This is when the goddess is believed to menstruate, the sanctum closes for roughly three days, and hundreds of thousands of sadhus and pilgrims, including many tantriks who rarely appear in public, converge on Nilachal, earning it the name Mahakumbh of the East. The reopening, when devotees receive the red angodak and cloth prasad, is the emotional climax.
