Kamakhya has no equal within Assam on the pan-India pilgrim circuit, and the hill itself is really a cluster: the main Kamakhya shrine is ringed by the Dasha Mahavidya temples, small shrines to Kali, Tara, Bhairavi, Bhuvaneshwari, Chinnamasta and the other tantric goddesses, so a full darshan means walking the whole Nilachal complex, not just the sanctum. Treat that as your first day of temple-hopping before you look beyond the state.
Among the great Shakti sites reachable from here, the natural onward line runs into Bengal and Jharkhand. Kalighat and Dakshineswar in Kolkata are the two towering Kali temples of eastern India, an overnight train or a short flight away, and they pair beautifully with Kamakhya for a Shakti-focused journey. Farther along, Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar is unusual for being both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha. None of these are literally close to Guwahati, but on the eastern goddess trail they are the shrines Kamakhya pilgrims most often continue to.
