Every route to Kamakhya funnels through Guwahati and ends with a climb up Nilachal Hill. Flying in, you land at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar, about 20 km out, and a prepaid taxi takes 45 to 60 minutes to the temple depending on city traffic. By rail, aim for Kamakhya Junction (about 6.8 km), which is closer than Guwahati Junction (about 8 km) and a scheduled stop for many trains; from the platform an auto or taxi handles the last stretch up the hill in 15 to 20 minutes.
The final ascent is its own leg. From the foot of Nilachal Hill it is roughly 6 km of narrow, curving road to the temple, plied by shared Sumos, autos and taxis, and there is also a long stone stepped footpath for those who prefer to climb on foot. During big festivals, especially Ambubachi and Durga Puja, private vehicles are often barred from the hill road and pilgrims walk up or use administration shuttles from the base, so build in extra time and wear shoes you can walk and queue in for hours.
