The Mahabodhi complex keeps a long single-shift day, roughly 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, without the midday closure common at many Hindu temples. That is deliberate: this is a working meditation site as much as a monument, and monks and lay pilgrims want unbroken access to the Vajrasana and the Bodhi Tree from before dawn to late evening. Winter mornings (December to January) can be cold and foggy, so crowds build after sunrise; summer pushes serious practice into the early morning and post-sunset cool. On Buddha Purnima and during events like the Kalachakra or international Tipitaka chanting, access is reorganised and hours extended, and security is tighter.
