This is the reason most outsiders have heard of the place. A quiet farming village becomes a fairground of folk dance, cattle and horse displays, rural sports sometimes called a village Olympics, craft stalls, and the unmistakable tall, embroidered Tarnetar umbrellas that a marriageable young man carries as a signal. If you can only come once, come then, but expect crowds of the order of a lakh and book a tent early.
Outside the fair, choose your season by what you want. Shravan (July to August) and its Mondays bring devotional intensity without the fairground chaos; Maha Shivratri in February or March delivers a night-long Shiva vigil. For a calm, comfortable darshan with time to sit by the kunds, the winter months of November to February have the kindest weather, as Saurashtra summers are punishingly hot and the monsoon can make the rural approach roads messy.
