| Shri Amarnath Yatra | Shravan, approx early July to late August (2026: 3 Jul to 28 Aug) | The pilgrimage itself. The only period the cave is open; lakhs of devotees trek in over roughly 50 to 60 days to see Baba Barfani. |
| Shravan Purnima / Raksha Bandhan | Full moon of Shravan (August) | The climax of the yatra. The ice lingam traditionally attains its greatest height, and the Chhari Mubarak reaches the cave for the final rites that formally close the pilgrimage. Peak |
| Chhari Mubarak procession | Days leading up to Shravan Purnima | The saffron-robed silver mace of Lord Shiva is carried from the Dashnami Akhara in Srinagar via Pahalgam, Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panjtarni to the cave, one of the oldest rituals of the yatra. |
There is no off-season alternative to weigh: the best time to visit Amarnath is the only time it is open, the yatra in the month of Shravan, which in 2026 runs 3 July to 28 August. The strategic choice is which slice of that window to pick. The ice lingam is generally taller and firmer earlier in the season and around the full moon, and tends to shrink as the summer sun works on the snowmelt, so pilgrims who care most about a full-bodied lingam lean earlier and cooler.
The emotional peak is Shravan Purnima, the full moon that coincides with Raksha Bandhan, when tradition holds the lingam reaches its greatest height and the Chhari Mubarak arrives to close the pilgrimage. It is the most auspicious day and also the most crowded and weather-exposed, a genuine trade-off.
For most pilgrims a mid-season date, a few weeks in, off the full-moon peak, is the sweet spot: a decent lingam, thinner queues, slightly kinder weather and easier tent and helicopter availability. Whatever you choose, book the registration slot early, because per-day caps mean popular dates fill fast.
