Think of the journey in three legs. First, the long haul: fly into Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, the closest airport at roughly 90 km from Pahalgam and 100 km from Baltal, or take a train to Jammu Tawi, the long-standing nearest major railhead, roughly 178 km by road from the Baltal base (approx). Srinagar now has its own rail links too, useful as an alternative to the Jammu road slog.
Second, the road transfer to a base camp. The Baltal base sits near Sonamarg, about 95 km from Srinagar; the Pahalgam base at Nunwan is about 90 km from Srinagar. Shared cabs and taxis run these roads through the yatra season, and pilgrims are often organised into escorted convoys for security, so build in buffer time for checks and halts.
Third, the trek, which no vehicle can replace. From Baltal it is a short, steep push of about 14 km one-way; from Pahalgam it is a longer, gentler climb of about 46 to 48 km over 3 to 5 days through Chandanwari, the Pissu Top, Sheshnag lake, the Mahagunas pass and Panjtarni. Both routes offer a helicopter shortcut to Panjtarni, after which a few kilometres on foot, pony or palki still remain to the cave.
