Virupaksha runs on the rhythm of a working temple rather than a monument, so its clock is built around puja rather than tourist convenience. The gates typically open around 6:30 AM and the complex stays broadly accessible until about 6:30 PM, but the inner sanctum where the Shiva linga is worshipped usually observes a midday break in the region of 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM while the priests rest and the noon rituals conclude. If your goal is a proper darshan of the deity rather than just walking the courtyards, plan for the morning or the late-afternoon window.

The single best slot is the first hour after opening. The light is soft on the eastern gopuram, the granite is still cool underfoot, tour buses have not yet arrived from Hosapete, and you catch the morning aarti. Late afternoon into the evening aarti is the second-best window and rewards you with sunset colour on the tower. Avoid rolling up at midday: you may find the sanctum shut and the open stone punishingly hot. On major festival days the whole schedule stretches and crowds swell, so treat the standard hours as a guide, not a guarantee, and ask a priest on arrival.
