Virupaksha Temple, Hampi: Where to Stay

Most pilgrims and travellers base themselves in Hosapete (Hospet), about 13 km away, which has the widest range of budget lodges, mid-range hotels, and a few resorts, plus reliable transport back to the temple. On the temple side, Hampi village offers simple guesthouses and homestays within walking distance of the gopuram, ideal for catching the dawn aarti, though options are basic and can be booked out in festival season. Across the river, the Virupapur Gadde (Hampi island) area draws backpackers with laid-back guesthouses, reached by coracle or the road bridge. For more comfort, Kamalapur and the outskirts have KSTDC and heritage-style properties. Book well ahead for Rathotsava and Hampi Utsav dates.

The main lodging hub is Hosapete (Hospet), about 13 km from the temple, where you will find the broadest choice of budget lodges, mid-range hotels, and a couple of resorts, along with dependable transport to and from Hampi. It is the sensible base if you want air-conditioning, restaurants, and an early bus or taxi to the dawn aarti.

Closer in, Hampi village puts you within walking distance of the gopuram, with simple guesthouses and homestays that are perfect for early-morning darshan but basic in comfort and quick to fill during festivals. Across the Tungabhadra, the Virupapur Gadde or Hampi island side has a relaxed backpacker scene of guesthouses and cafes, reached by coracle or road bridge. For something quieter or more comfortable, look at Kamalapur and the outskirts, including KSTDC and heritage-style stays. Whatever you choose, reserve well in advance for Rathotsava and Hampi Utsav, when the whole area books out.
