As a living Jyotirlinga shrine, Bhimashankar expects modest, traditional dress from every visitor. Shorts, sleeveless tops and short skirts are discouraged; a sari, salwar kameez, dhoti or simple covered clothing keeps you comfortable in the queue and respectful at the sanctum.

Because abhishek is central here, many male devotees perform it in a dhoti or bare-chested as guided by the priest. Footwear comes off before the steps down to the temple, so wear something easy to slip out of and use the shoe stand rather than carrying them into the crowd.

Practical restrictions apply near the garbhagriha: leather articles are best left behind, and phones or cameras may not be permitted at the inner sanctum during busy hours. On peak days the corridor to the linga is narrow and the steps steep, so carry as little as possible and keep valuables secure.
