Every approach to Badrinath funnels into one long climb up the Alaknanda gorge, and the last stretch is the crux. From the plains you first reach Rishikesh (nearest railhead, approx 295 km) or fly into Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun (approx 317 km). From there it is a full-day drive of 10 to 12 hours through Devprayag, Srinagar (Garhwal), Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Joshimath. Haridwar (approx 324 km) is the better rail choice for anyone coming from Delhi, Mumbai or Lucknow because far more long-distance trains stop there.
Joshimath, approx 45 km short of the shrine, is the last real town: fuel, ATMs, hotels and the winter seat of the deity. Above Joshimath the road narrows and in past seasons has run on one-way time-slot (gate) systems to manage traffic and landslide-prone sections; monsoon months (July to September) see the most closures. Shared taxis and state buses run the whole chain from Rishikesh upward, and helicopter services operate to the Badrinath area in season for those short on time. Distances quoted here are approx and vary a few kilometres by source and by road diversions.
