The single most important thing to internalise about Badrinath timings is the midday shutdown. Doors open at 4:30 AM with the Maha Abhishek and stay open for morning darshan until 1:00 PM, then the temple closes from 1 PM to 4 PM for bhog, cleaning and reserved pujas. It reopens at 4:00 PM and runs the evening session to 9:00 PM, when the Shayan (Geet Govind) Aarti puts the deity to rest. A pilgrim who reaches town at 2 PM will find the doors shut and must wait for the 4 PM reopening.
Unlike lowland temples, the seasonal variation here is binary, not a matter of shifting hours. The daily windows stay broadly the same all season; what changes is whether the temple exists as an open shrine at all. Opening (approx 23 April 2026) and closing (approx mid-November, announced on Vijayadashami) dates are set afresh each year by the Temple Committee and Rawal. Between those two dates the schedule holds; outside them the shrine is sealed and worship relocates to Joshimath. All times are approx and can be overridden on major festival days or for protocol darshan, so confirm on the official committee site close to your travel date.
