Worship at Yamunotri centres on the black marble idol of the goddess and on the thermal water that surrounds her. The day opens with a morning aarti around 6:30 AM and closes with an evening aarti around 7:30 PM, both timed loosely to sunrise and sunset at altitude. The hereditary priests, traditionally from Kharsali across the valley, conduct the pujas.
The signature ritual is unique to this shrine. Pilgrims tie raw rice and potatoes in a muslin cloth and dip the bundle into Surya Kund, a spring so hot the food actually cooks; it is then taken back as blessed prasad. Before praying to Yamuna, devotees first honour the Divya Shila, a rock pillar beside the kund, and many bathe in the warmer Tapt Kund waters.
Exact aarti and puja times shift with the season and the crowd, and there is no elaborate ticketed VIP aarti as at larger temples. Simplicity and the raw mountain setting are the point; plan to be present for either the morning or evening aarti rather than assuming a precise minute.
