Yamunotri can only be visited during its open season, roughly late April or early May through October or November. The two most comfortable windows are May to June, when the trek is clear and the yatra is in full swing, and September to November, when the monsoon has passed, skies are crisp and crowds thin out. July and August bring heavy rain and real landslide risk on the approach roads.
The year's biggest days are the opening on Akshaya Tritiya, when the goddess is carried up from Kharsali and the shrine reopens, and the closing on Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj) two days after Diwali, a festival of the bond between Yamuna and her brother Yama that is especially resonant at her own source.
