Yamunotri is the hardest Char Dham shrine to reach because the last stretch has no road. The nearest railhead is Rishikesh, about 210 km away, with Dehradun and Haridwar as alternatives; the nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun, roughly 198 to 210 km out. From any of these you drive a full mountain day via Barkot to Janki Chatti, the last motorable point.
From Janki Chatti the temple is about 6 km uphill on a paved trail. Fit pilgrims walk it in around 2.5 to 3 hours; others hire ponies, a doli (four-porter palanquin) or a pithoo (a porter who carries you in a basket) at the stands near the parking. Rates are usually fixed and displayed, so agree the price before you start.
All distances here are approximate road distances and depend on the route and conditions. The Yamunotri valley is landslide-prone in the monsoon and roads can close at short notice, so check the state's Char Dham advisories and register for the yatra before setting out.
