The single most important thing to know about visiting Kalighat is the midday shutdown. The sanctum opens around 5:00 AM with the Mangala Aarti, runs a busy morning session until 2:00 PM, then closes completely from 2 PM to 5 PM for the bhog and cleaning of the shrine. It reopens at 5:00 PM and stays open until about 10:30 PM. Pilgrims who show up at 3 in the afternoon expecting darshan are turned away, so slot your visit into the morning or evening block.

Of the two windows, early morning is the reward. Arriving soon after opening, before the tour groups and the office-hour crowd build up, means shorter queues, cooler air in the packed lanes, and a little more time in front of the goddess before you are gently moved along. The evening session has its own atmosphere, lamp-lit and charged, but it is also when local devotees pour in after work.

All these times are approximate and flex on special days. On Amavasya, Tuesdays and Saturdays the crowds swell, and during Kali Puja and other major festivals the temple often abandons the normal schedule and stays open far later, sometimes right through the night.
