If you can choose your dates, the October to March window gives the most comfortable weather for both the darshan and the Gabbar climb, when the north Gujarat heat has eased. Early mornings on ordinary weekdays are the quietest, and the light on the hills at that hour is worth the early start.
The calendar, though, is dominated by Bhadarvi Poonam, the full moon of the Bhadrapada month around August to September, when the fair spread over Teras, Chaudas and Poonam pulls in more than 1.5 million pilgrims. Huge numbers walk to Ambaji on foot in organised padyatras, community kitchens run around the clock, and the town becomes one continuous stream of devotion. It is the most powerful time to come and, equally, the hardest for a calm darshan.
Navratri layers nine nights of garba and goddess worship over the shrine, Diwali brings its own lights and crowds, and every monthly Purnima offers a smaller taste of the full-moon fervour with extended access. Choose a festival for atmosphere and a plain weekday for peace; the two visits are almost different temples.
