Ambaji anchors a cluster of very different sacred sites, so the area rewards a day or two beyond the main darshan. Just about 1.5 km away lies Kumbhariya, home to a group of intricately carved 13th-century Jain temples, with the Neminath temple the best known; the marble work is a striking contrast to the plain devotion of the Shakti sanctum.
About 5 km from the town, Gabbar Hill is considered the original seat of the goddess. A climb of 999 steps, or a ropeway for those who prefer it, leads to the hilltop shrine with sweeping views over the Arasur ranges, and the light-and-sound story of the goddess is traditionally staged here (confirm its status, as shows can be suspended).
Further afield, Ambaji belongs to the great triad of Gujarat's goddess temples alongside Bahucharaji and the Mahakali shrine at Pavagadh, making a wider Devi circuit possible. Heading back toward Ahmedabad, the 11th-century Modhera Sun Temple is a worthwhile heritage stop, pairing the region's living faith with its Solanki-era architectural peak.
