Modhera Sun Temple: the stone almanac where the equinox sun still finds the sanctum

Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty raised this temple to Surya on the banks of the Pushpavati in 1026-27 CE, and a thousand years later it is less a place of daily prayer than a working instrument of light. There is no idol in the sanctum and no priest ringing a bell, yet at the two equinoxes the rising sun still runs the length of the axis and lands in the empty garbhagriha, exactly as the builders intended. Dress code & temple rules

Dress modestly as you would for any sacred heritage site: cover shoulders and knees.

Footwear is generally allowed on the outer complex paths, but remove shoes before stepping onto the inner shrine platforms where asked.

Do not climb on, sit inside, or lean against the carvings and the 108 Surya Kund shrines; it is a protected ASI monument.

Photography for personal use is normally permitted; tripods, drones and commercial/pre-wedding shoots need prior ASI permission.

Most visitors do Modhera as a day trip from Ahmedabad or overnight in Mehsana, which has the widest choice of hotels. Right at the site, Modhera Sunrise Resort sits just behind the temple and is the convenient pick for catching the early light, with a handful of restaurants and rooms (such as The Sun Glorious) nearby. Becharaji/Bahucharaji, about 35 km away, adds pilgrim-oriented lodges and dharamshala-style stays. There is no large temple dharamshala at Modhera itself, so book ahead during the January dance festival when rooms fill fast.
