Time your visit to the reopening rather than the calendar quarter. Because the hill is shut for the four monsoon months, the pilgrimage effectively restarts at Kartik Purnima around November, and the following winter, November to February, is the ideal season: cool 15 to 30 C weather that makes a barefoot climb bearable and long daylight for a safe descent.
Kartik Purnima itself is the single most auspicious and most crowded day, when the hill reopens and tens of thousands ascend. If you want the atmosphere of a great gathering, come then; if you want a calmer climb, choose an ordinary winter weekday and start at dawn.
The other landmark occasions are the Falgun and Chaitra observances. Around February to March devotees undertake grand circumambulations of the hill (the Chha Gau and Falgun Feri parikramas), and Chaitri Purnima with Mahavir Janma Kalyanak in spring again fills Taleti. Summer before the monsoon is climbable but harsh on bare feet, and the monsoon window is closed entirely.
