Somnath Temple: Dress Code & Temple Rules

• Dress modestly: traditional Indian wear or decent casuals like trousers and shirts are welcome; mini skirts and disrespectful clothing are not permitted
• Footwear must be removed before entering the temple; stands are available near the gates
• Electronic and electrical items are strictly barred inside: mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, laptops, tablets and similar gadgets must be deposited in the cloakroom or locker near the main gate
• Leather belts and similar leather articles are discouraged inside the sanctum area
• Smoking and tobacco are prohibited across the temple grounds
• Photography of the sanctum is not allowed; the exterior and seafront can generally be photographed from designated areas

Somnath's dress expectations are moderate rather than strict: think decent and covered rather than a rigid uniform. Traditional Indian wear is ideal, but trousers and a shirt are perfectly acceptable. What draws objection is anything skimpy or, in the temple's own words, disrespectful, so leave the mini skirts, very short shorts and beachwear at the hotel, which is easy to forget in a seaside town.

The rule that catches most first-timers is the electronics ban. Unlike many temples that merely discourage phones, Somnath enforces a full deposit: mobiles, cameras, smartwatches, tablets and laptops all go into the cloakroom or lockers by the main gate before you step in. Budget a few extra minutes for this on arrival, especially in peak season.

Footwear comes off outside, leather items are best avoided near the sanctum, and the whole complex is strictly no-smoking. Sanctum photography is not permitted, though the striking exterior and the Baan Stambh seafront can be photographed from the open areas once you have collected your phone.
