As an active Shakti shrine, Maihar expects modest, traditional dress; shoulders and legs covered, nothing skimpy. There is no elaborate enforced uniform, but respectful attire keeps you comfortable in the crowd and in line with fellow pilgrims.

The temple's real dress-and-conduct challenge is the climb. Footwear comes off before the sanctum, and many pilgrims go barefoot or in socks on the steps as an act of devotion, so if you plan to walk the 1,063 stairs, factor in warm stone in summer and cold stone in winter. Grippy, easily removable footwear for the base, plus water and a cap, make the ascent far easier.

Inside the sanctum, photography is generally restricted and leather items are best left outside. During Navratri the single most important rule is simply to keep the queue moving; the crush of lakhs of devotees means darshan is brief and stopping to linger is discouraged.
