Maihar Sharda Devi Temple: How to Reach

Maihar Sharda Devi: How to ReachMaihar sits on the Mumbai-Howrah main line, so most pilgrims arrive by train and then take a short auto or taxi hop to the hill base, where the steps and ropeway both begin. The nearest railway station is Maihar Railway Station (Approx 5 km to hill base).

Maihar's biggest advantage is its railway station, sitting on the busy Mumbai-Howrah main line, so a large number of mail and express trains halt right in town. From the station it is only about 5 km to the foot of Trikut Hill, a 10 to 15 minute auto-rickshaw or taxi ride, which is why most pilgrims arrive by rail rather than by air.

If you fly, plan on a road leg: Jabalpur airport is roughly 150 km away, Khajuraho about 130 km, and Prayagraj (Allahabad) is a further option, each a three to four hour drive. By road, the nearest big city and rail junction is Satna, about 35 to 40 km north, from where buses and shared taxis run frequently to Maihar along the national highway.

At the hill base you choose your ascent: the 1,063-step stone stairway, which most fit pilgrims manage in 45 to 60 minutes with rest stops, or the ropeway cabin that runs roughly 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM and cuts the climb to a few minutes. The ropeway is ticketed and its queue can be long on festival days, so early arrival helps either way.
