Rameshwaram is an island town on Pamban Island, joined to the Tamil Nadu mainland by the celebrated Pamban rail and road bridges over the sea. The temple sits in the middle of the town, so once you are on the island the last leg is short. Rameswaram railway station (RMM), about 2 km away, is the practical arrival point for most pilgrims, with direct trains from Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Thanjavur and Bengaluru.

By air, Madurai Airport (IXM) is the nearest at roughly 174 km, about 3 to 3.5 hours by road via NH87; Tuticorin airport is a slightly farther alternative at around 189 km. From Madurai city the road distance is about 173 km, and buses and taxis run frequently across the Pamban bridge onto the island.

Within town, autos and local buses cover the short hop between the station, the bus stand and the temple. Many visitors combine the trip with Dhanushkodi at the island's tip, so factor an extra half day if you want to see the ghost town and the land's end beyond Rameshwaram.
