Ramanathaswamy runs on two clean shifts a day. The doors open around 5:00 AM for the Spatika (crystal) lingam ritual, a short and prized window from roughly 5:00 to 6:00 AM when the crystal lingam is bathed and shown before the general public darshan begins. General darshan of the main Ramalingam and the Vishwalingam then runs to 1:00 PM.
The 1:00 to 3:00 PM midday closure is absolute; the temple empties and no darshan happens in that slot, so plan meals or the sea bath around it rather than expecting to slip in.
