How to reach Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameshwaram
Rameshwaram sits on Pamban Island off the Tamil Nadu coast, reached from the mainland across the historic Pamban rail and road bridges. The temple is in the heart of the small island town, walkable from the station and the sea.

Dress code & temple rules
Traditional Indian attire is expected; jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other Western casuals are discouraged and often not allowed for the main darshan.
Men typically wear a veshti or dhoti (often bare-chested or with an angavastram) for the core rituals; women wear a saree or salwar kameez.
Because most pilgrims bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham and then the 22 wells before darshan, carry a full change of dry clothes and a towel; you must be in dry clothes to enter for the main lingam.
Footwear is removed before entering; leave shoes at the stands outside as the granite floors and corridors are walked barefoot.
Photography is restricted inside the sanctum and inner corridors; follow the posted rules and temple staff instructions.

Best time to visit & festivals
October to March brings the coolest, most comfortable weather for the long barefoot walk through the corridors and the open-air well bathing; summers are hot and humid, and the northeast monsoon can bring heavy rain around October to December. Weekdays, especially Tuesday to Thursday, see shorter queues than weekends and new-moon days.

Most pilgrims stay in Rameshwaram town within walking distance of the temple and Agni Theertham, where budget lodges and mid-range hotels cluster along the streets near the East and West gopurams (many just a 3 to 12 minute walk from the temple). Options run from simple pilgrim rooms and Tamil Nadu tourism accommodation to a handful of better-appointed hotels; the Ramanathaswamy Devasthanam and various maths also offer basic rooms. Book ahead for Maha Shivaratri, Ramalinga Prathishta and new-moon days, when the town fills quickly. Many travellers instead base themselves in Madurai and make Rameshwaram a long day or overnight trip.
