Katra is the single gateway, and getting there is straightforward. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station (SVDK) sits inside the town, a short hop from the registration area, and is a purpose-built terminal with direct trains from Delhi, including a Vande Bharat, plus long-distance services from many states. If you cannot get a Katra train, Jammu Tawi is the fallback railhead with onward taxis and buses.
By air, the nearest airport is Jammu (Satwari), roughly 48 to 50 km away, from where cabs and buses cover the run to Katra on NH44 in about one and a half to two hours. Srinagar airport exists as a distant alternative but is rarely used for this yatra. By road, Katra is well connected to Jammu (about 48 km), and through it to Amritsar and the wider highway grid, with frequent buses and shared taxis.
From Katra the climb itself begins after registration. The traditional route runs through Banganga, Charan Paduka, Ardh Kuwari, Himkoti and Sanjichhat before the Bhawan, about 13 km in all. The newer Tarakote Marg is a gentler, longer parallel path favoured for the ascent. Those who cannot walk can hire ponies or palkis at Banganga, use battery-operated cars on the permitted stretches, or fly Katra to Sanjichhat by helicopter and complete only the short final leg.
