Most pilgrims base themselves in Katra, which has the widest range of stays, from budget lodges and dharamshalas to comfortable mid-range and premium hotels near the bus stand and registration area. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board also runs its own accommodation (bhawans and dormitories) at Katra and, crucially, up the route at Ardh Kuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan itself, so devotees can break the climb or rest after darshan. Shrine Board rooms are clean and inexpensive but limited, and everything sells out fast during Navratri and holidays, so book well ahead. Many trekkers simply climb through the cooler night and rest briefly at Bhawan or Sanjichhat rather than taking a full room.

What sets Vaishno Devi apart is that the Shrine Board also runs its own accommodation up the mountain, not just in Katra. There are bhawans, rooms and dormitories at Ardh Kuwari roughly midway, at Sanjichhat near the top, and at the Bhawan itself, which lets pilgrims break the ascent or rest after darshan before heading down. These Shrine Board rooms are clean and inexpensive but limited in number.
Because supply is capped and demand spikes hard, availability collapses during Navratri, summer holidays and long weekends, and prices in private Katra hotels rise accordingly. Book ahead through the Shrine Board or hotels if you want a guaranteed room. Many trekkers skip a full room on the mountain altogether, climbing through the cooler night and taking only a short rest at Bhawan or Sanjichhat before descending.
