For a peaceful darshan and pleasant weather, come in the cool season from October to February, when coastal humidity eases and the town is calmer. The festival calendar, however, is the real reason many time their visit. The summer sequence builds from Chandan Yatra in late April, a 42-day cooling festival with sandalwood paste and evening boat rides, through Snana Yatra in June, when the deities are bathed with 108 pots of water and then withdrawn for the Anavasara fortnight.
The climax is Rath Yatra, around 16 July 2026, when Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are drawn on three colossal chariots down the Grand Road to the Gundicha Temple by lakhs of devotees. The return Bahuda Yatra follows about a week later, and the deities appear in dazzling gold ornaments for the Suna Besha. If you want the spectacle, plan for the crowds, heat and full lodging; if you want quiet contemplation, avoid the Rath Yatra fortnight altogether.
