Srirangam sits at the centre of Tamil Nadu's temple country, so a few days here open onto some of the greatest shrines in India. Closest is the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur, about 55 km away, the towering Chola granite masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage site that pairs naturally with Srirangam for a temple-architecture trail.
Southwest lies Madurai, about 130 km on, where the Meenakshi Temple dazzles with its painted gopurams and the shrine of the goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswarar. It is a different mood entirely, dense, colourful and urban, and makes a strong two-shrine pairing with the calmer, more expansive Srirangam.
For those willing to go further, the island temple of Ramanathaswamy at Rameshwaram, roughly 230 km southeast, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the site of the longest pillared corridor in the country. Within Srirangam island itself, do not miss the nearby Jambukeswarar temple at Thiruvanaikaval, the water-element shrine that traditionally partners this fire-and-water pair, which many pilgrims combine into a single visit.
