Ram Mandir, Ayodhya: Dress Code & Temple Rules

  • No formal uniform is enforced, but modest traditional wear is expected: kurta-pyjama, dhoti-kurta, saree or salwar-kameez. Shorts, mini-skirts and overtly western or revealing outfits are best avoided.
  • Soft, calm colours suit the setting; many pilgrims wear white, saffron, yellow or pastel shades, and dress up in festive traditional attire on Ram Navami and Deepotsav.
  • Footwear is removed and deposited before entering; there are stands and lockers for shoes.
  • Mobile phones, cameras, earphones, smartwatches, remote keys, large bags and food are not permitted inside the temple complex. Use the cloakroom or locker facilities near the entry to deposit them.
  • Security screening is strict, so travel light and carry only essentials; a small pouch clears the checks faster than a backpack.

There is no enforced uniform, but the mandir expects modest, traditional attire in keeping with a major place of worship. Men favour kurta-pyjama or dhoti-kurta; women wear saree or salwar-kameez. Shorts, mini-skirts and revealing or overtly western outfits are best left at the hotel. Soft colours suit the mood, with white, saffron, yellow and pastels common, and festive traditional dress on Ram Navami and Deepotsav.

The rule that catches most first-timers is the ban on electronics and bags inside. Mobile phones, cameras, earphones, smartwatches, remote keys, large bags and food are not allowed past security; deposit them at the lockers or cloakroom near the entry. Footwear comes off and goes to the shoe stands before you enter. Screening is thorough, so carry only a small pouch with essentials to clear the checks quickly and keep the queue moving.
