Shri Naina Devi Ji, the hill where Sati's eye came to rest

On a pine-clad spur in Bilaspur district, high above the blue sheet of Gobind Sagar reservoir, sits one of the most visited Shakti Peethas of the Himachal hills. Pilgrims climb the stepped path or ride the ropeway to the sanctum where, in the old telling, the right eye (naina) of the goddess Sati fell to earth. The same shrine is revered as Mahishapeeth, the seat where the Devi as Mahishasura Mardini slew the buffalo-demon.

How to reach Shri Naina Devi Ji Temple

The temple crowns a hill on the Punjab-Himachal border, easiest to approach from the Kiratpur-Anandpur Sahib side. You reach the base town of Naina Devi by road, then finish on foot up concrete steps or by the ropeway.

Dress code & temple rules

Dress modestly; cover shoulders and legs, as at any hill Devi shrine.

Remove leather items and footwear before the sanctum area.

Coconut, chunni, prasad and offerings are sold at stalls along the steps.

Photography is usually restricted inside the inner sanctum; follow posted signs and staff.

In Navratri and Shravan carry water and go slow on the climb; the crush on mela days is real, so keep children close.

Wear sturdy shoes for the stairs and warm layers in winter as the hilltop is windy.

Best time to visit & festivals

The shrine is busiest and most alive during Navratri and the Shravan mela, but the cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable for the climb and the reservoir views.

Where to stay

Most pilgrims stay in Naina Devi town at the base, where the temple trust runs sarais and dharamshalas and small hotels cluster near the bus stand. Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib, roughly 20 to 30 km away, offer more rooms, gurdwara sarais and eateries, and Bilaspur town has hotels by Gobind Sagar. Many travellers do Naina Devi as a day trip from Anandpur Sahib or Chandigarh.
