How to reach Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Ujjain
Ujjain sits in western Madhya Pradesh and is easiest reached via Indore, about 55 km away, which has the nearest airport. The temple is in the old city, walkable from Ujjain Junction.

Dress code & temple rules
Bhasma Aarti has the strictest code: men wear a dhoti (often bare-chested or with an upper cloth) and women wear a saree or full salwar suit; some traditional-wear rules apply for entering the sanctum during the aarti.
Avoid jeans, shorts, skirts, sleeveless tops, and ripped or Western clothing for sanctum entry; modest, traditional dress is expected.
Covering the head is customary before entering the inner sanctum, especially for the aarti.
Leather items (belts, wallets) are discouraged inside; mobile phones, cameras, and bags are typically not allowed near the sanctum and go to cloakrooms.
General darshan is more relaxed than the Bhasma Aarti but still expects respectful, covered clothing.

Ujjain is worth visiting year round, but the mood and the crowds swing hard with the Hindu calendar. Winter (October to March) is the most comfortable weather; the sacred month of Shravan is the most electric and the most crowded.

Where to stay
Most pilgrims stay in the old city within walking distance of the temple, from 100 metres to about 1 km. Temple-trust and community dharamshalas (such as Mahakal Bhakt Niwas and various bhawans on Chaubis Khamba Marg and Jaisinghpura) offer budget two-, three-, and four-bed rooms and dormitories, roughly 500 to 1,200 rupees a night. Mid-range hotels near the temple run about 1,200 to 2,500 rupees with AC and parking. Indore, 55 km away, has the widest range of larger hotels if Ujjain is full during Shravan or Mahashivratri.
