The practical gateway is Indore, about 77 km and two to three hours away by road, with the nearest airport (Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar) roughly 83 km out. Buses, shared taxis and private cabs run from Indore through Sanawad or via the Khandwa road to Omkareshwar town, which sits on the mainland bank of the Narmada.

By rail, the closest halt is Omkareshwar Road (station code OM) at Mortakka, about 12 km from the ghats, but it is a small station with limited services; most travellers instead alight at Khandwa Junction (approx 70 km) or Indore Junction (approx 77 km), both far better connected to Mumbai, Delhi and the south. From the town, you reach the island shrine either across the road bridge or by the ferry boats that cross to the Om-shaped Mandhata island. Keep some time in hand: the last stretch and the walk up to the sanctum are done on foot through narrow lanes lined with stalls.
