Girnar makes two different demands on what you wear, and getting both right is the mark of a prepared pilgrim. The first is reverence: these are living Jain and Hindu shrines, so cover your shoulders and knees, favour traditional or modest clothing, and be ready to remove footwear before entering any temple. Inside the Jain complex, leather goods (belts, wallets, bags) are best left outside or avoided altogether, and photography of the main idols is frequently restricted, so ask before pointing a camera.

The second demand is the mountain itself. Nearly 10,000 steep, uneven stone steps gaining well over a kilometre of height is a serious trek, not a temple stroll. Grippy walking or hiking shoes, breathable layers, a hat, sunscreen and at least a litre or two of water per person are essentials; the upper flights are fully exposed and there is little shade once the sun is up. Many carry a light stick, and elderly or tired pilgrims hire a doli (palanquin) carried by bearers, which is completely accepted here.

A regional note: Junagadh and its temple culture lean strongly vegetarian, so do not carry meat, eggs or alcohol onto the hill. Modest dress, clean footwear left at the shrine door, and respect for photography and leather rules will keep you on the right side of every tradition sharing this mountain.
