Girnar Temples (Girnar Parvat): Nearby Temples & Tirths

Girnar: Nearby Temples & TirthsGirnar sits within reach of Somnath, Chotila (Chamunda), Palitana (Shatrunjaya), so most pilgrims combine them into one trip.

Girnar sits at the heart of the best temple circuit in Saurashtra, so few pilgrims come only for the one climb. The natural pairing is Somnath, about 90 km south on the Arabian Sea, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the most storied Shiva shrines in India; Girnar and Somnath are routinely done as a two-day pair, often with a night at Gir in between for the Asiatic lions.

Closer to the Rajkot road is Chotila, about 110 km away, where the Chamunda Mata temple crowns a steep little hill that pilgrims climb in twenty to thirty minutes; it is a popular quick halt on the drive between Ahmedabad and the coast. For Jain pilgrims, the giant marble temple-city of Palitana on Shatrunjaya hill, roughly 175 km east near Bhavnagar, is the other great climb of Gujarat and a fitting companion tirth to Girnar's Neminath shrines.

Right at the base, do not skip Bhavnath Mahadev and the Damodar Kund complex in Junagadh, along with the Ashokan rock edicts and the Uparkot fort, which make the town itself worth a day. Stringing Girnar together with Somnath, Gir and Junagadh's own monuments turns a single hard climb into a rich three or four day Saurashtra pilgrimage.
