Dilwara Jain Temples, Mount Abu: Dress Code & Temple Rules

• Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees. Shorts, short dresses and revealing clothing are not permitted inside.
• Remove all footwear before entering the temple platform.
• Leather items are banned inside: no leather belts, wallets, purses, bags, shoes or camera straps.
• Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside all five shrines. Cameras and phones may need to be deposited.
• Maintain silence and do not touch the carvings or idols.
• By Shvetambara Jain custom, menstruating women are traditionally requested not to enter the shrines.
• A wash or bath is expected of Jains before performing puja; passive solar-heated bathing facilities are provided.

Dilwara enforces its rules more firmly than most temples, and getting them wrong means being turned back. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered; shorts, short dresses and revealing outfits are refused. Footwear comes off at the platform edge. The strictest rule concerns leather: belts, wallets, purses, handbags, shoes and even camera straps made of leather are all banned inside, a reflection of the Jain principle of ahimsa, non-violence toward living beings.

The second hard rule is no photography or videography anywhere inside the five shrines, partly to protect the fragile carvings and partly out of reverence; you may be asked to deposit cameras and phones. Keep silence, do not touch the marble or the idols, and by Shvetambara custom menstruating women are traditionally asked not to enter. None of this is negotiable at the gate, so leave the leather in the car and the camera in your bag.
